Fastest — recommended Southeastern High Speed 1 (the “Javelin”)

• Direct to London St Pancras International — no changes. Stops: Ebbsfleet International, Stratford International.
• ≈ 37 minutes end-to-end, up to 140 mph across High Speed 1.
• Frequency: up to 3 trains per hour (~every 20–30 min) roughly 05:00 → late evening. First direct departure ≈ 05:02; the final Ashford–St Pancras train varies by day — check the live timetable.
• Coming home (St Pancras → Ashford): ≈ 40 direct Southeastern services a day, journey ≈ 37 min, first ≈ 06:37. The last direct train is very late (≈ 00:12 Mon–Sat, 23:37 Sun) — so a post-show evening return is comfortable, with roughly 20–30-min gaps through the evening.
• Cheaper, slower alternative: a classic “mainline” service to London Bridge/Charing Cross (≈ 50–80 min). Not needed when HS1 runs.

St Pancras → Tower Hill by Tube (recommended)

From St Pancras, head to the Circle line platforms at the adjoining King’s Cross St Pancras Tube station and take the Circle line. It’s a direct train, no changes:

Fancier but fine too: a ~30 min walk along the Thames, or 1–2 stops extra to Bank/Monument for a short riverside stroll. With kids, the Tube is easiest.

1. Exit Tower Hill station via the Trinity Square exit (lift available).
2. Follow the “Tower of London” signposts; go through the subway tunnel that runs under the main road.
3. Walk past All Hallows by the Tower church (right) and Trinity Gardens (left).
4. Cross the moat bridge to the Middle Tower — this is the main entrance (bag check + ticket scan).
5. Once through, you’re in the Byward Tower courtyard — pick up a free family trail at the Welcome Centre.

On from the Tower → Cambridge Theatre (7pm show)

• Recommended route: take the District/Circle line westbound from Tower Hill to Embankment (≈ 6 min), change to the Northern line northbound to Leicester Square (2 stops, ≈ 4 min), then a ~5–6 min walk to the theatre. ≈ 30 min door-to-door.
• Legs tired? From Leicester Square take the Piccadilly line one stop to Covent Garden (≈ 3 min) — the theatre is then a ~3 min stroll.
• It’s a single Zone 1 Tube fare per person — the same contactless tap as the morning leg.

Official prices (Historic Royal Palaces, Aug 2026). Unlike some attractions, the Tower currently has no dedicated family ticket — children simply pay the child rate. The £37 price is the no-donation rate; there’s also a donation-price option (~£40.70 adult / ~£20.40 child) that adds a 10% charity gift.

Full-day itinerary — Tower of London + Matilda (7:00pm)

Assuming an off-peak morning train from Ashford; add ~15–20 min of buffer between platforms and stops.

Exact return trains: check National Rail / TfL on the day — evening St Pancras→Ashford departures run roughly every 20–30 min through to ~midnight. Long day for kids — see the tips below.

Evening: Matilda the Musical — Cambridge Theatre, 7:00pm

Address: 32–34 Earlham Street, Seven Dials, Covent Garden, WC2H 9HU — a ~3 min walk from Covent Garden station, ~6 min from Leicester Square.

Everything listed is a 3–8 min walk of the theatre around Covent Garden / Seven Dials / St Martin’s Lane. Book the early sitting (≈ 5:00–5:45pm) — show-night tables go quickly and kids eat better before curtain-up.

Names/locations are a guide — check current availability and menus on the venues’ own sites before you go. After dinner you’re one short Tube leg from the return route, so even a leisurely meal still leaves you well clear of the ~22:00 trains from St Pancras.

Tips for travelling with children

• Crown Jewels first — morning queues are dramatically shorter. Use the moving walkway through the Jewel House.
• Grab the free family trail at the Welcome Centre — it turns the day into a scavenger hunt.
• The Yeoman Warder tour is genuinely funny and full of stories kids love (ghosts, prisoners, beheadings — mild!).
• Book the early-morning entry slot for the Tower on the same day as a mid-morning train (see itinerary) so nothing feels rushed.
• Children 5–10 ride the Underground free with a paying adult — just don’t tap them on a contactless card yourself (that would charge).
• Plan a Wharf picnic to keep lunch cheap and quick — no restaurant wait.
• Legs get tired — Tower Hill and both trains have step-free access; the interior paths have some sloped/cobbled sections.
• It’s a long day (~08:30 → 23:00). The 7pm show is kinder than 7:30pm; let kids use the lifts, and pack something quiet for the train home.

Best times to visit & how long to allow

• Quietest: midweek, term-time; the Tower itself recommends the afternoons after midday. Crown Jewels is the exception — do it early.
• Busiest: weekends, school holidays and around the 10:00 gates. On those days a booked timeslot is essential.
• Allow: 2–3 hours inside comfortably (official recommendation “up to two or three hours”); the full day above runs ~08:30 → ~23:00 including the show.

Food options near the Tower

• The Perkin Reveller — inside the Tower, on the Wharf overlooking the Thames.
• Wharf food stalls / river kiosks — quick grab-and-go; picnic benches on the Wharf.
• St Katharine Docks (5-min walk north) — plenty of family-friendly cafés and restaurants.
• Around Tower Hill station — supermarket + chain cafés for cheap takeaway lunch.
